Confucius (551–479 BCE) directed that bringing harmony (和) between the energy in emotional arousals (e.g., 喜怒哀懼愛惡欲; happiness, anger, grief, fear, love, hate, and desire) and the being of nature (天; T’ien) is the way (道; Tao) to human nature (性). Chan (1963) translated the first phase of the Doctrine of the Mean (i.e., a doctrine of Confucianism) as: “What Heaven (T’ien, Nature) imparts to man is called human nature.
